The exuberant optimism played out on the runways, and taken in by the themes, colours and sometimes just plain kooky combinations. From shine and shimmering fabrics for day, to jumpsuits, harem pants and plenty of flowers, ruffles and bows, Spring 2009 is sure to be a lively time for fashion…
Asymmetrical Dresses & Blouses
Almost every designer had some version of this, usually in the form of a flowy dress but often as a top or fitted dress.
Controlled Volume
Since opposites attract, there was also plenty of volume on the Spring '09 runways. But designers kept it under control; sometimes with a belt or in other cases just because of the lightness and sheerness of the fabric itself.
Ruffles & Bows
Ruffles and bows dressed up simple silhouettes in the Spring 2009 Collections. Look for bows at the shoulders and hips and ruffles at hemlines.
See-Through, Sheer Fabrics
Seen in everything from evening gowns, to wear-to-work blouses, see-through material is a big trend for this Spring. Seen on the runway, these pieces were not made conservative with layers or undergarments. For the real world, though, a slip or light tank would be more appropriate.
White Dress
Definitely not replacing the ‘Little Black Dress’, the White Dress is a huge trend for this Spring. Instead of the simplicity and versatility of the LBD, though, the White Dress is a more glamorous pick in ruffles, maxi-lengths and sheer fabrics. Think Goddess!
Graphic Black and White:
Every season has its own version of black and white, whether it's fall's hound's-tooth or a crisp clean stripe for spring. In Spring 2009, the positive-negative of black and white will pop up in everything from swirling florals and embroideries to boxy graphics.
Cleopatra-Inspired
While asymmetrical dresses and harem pants are also in this vein, many designers used jeweled-necklines and other accents that harken back to the the days of Cleopatra.
Bohemian Style (Hippie Chic)
Bohemian Style was a big hit with a few designers. And, many designers had this look going in at least one of their styles. Think peasant blouses, flowery prints, loose-fitting, etc. The best way to pull this off this Spring is to pair a bohemian styled piece with something a bit more conservative like a beige skirt or vest. Or try it up side down - a bright pant paired with a neutral top and accessories.
High-Waisted Skirts, Pants, & Shorts
The cinched waist is a big trend in general, but the main way it was achieved was with high-waisted bottoms. Simple lines help achieve this look and create a very feminine silhouette.
Harem Pants
Harem Pants were surprisingly prevalent on the runways last week. Paired with belts, chunky heels, and drapey tops makes them a little more conceivable.
Pantsuits & Shortsuits
We haven’t really seen these since the late 80’s, but here they are again and much more stylish this time! Keep it simple and a tad drapey and you’re good.
Jumpsuits
are a ‘key item' for Spring and Summer '09. Whether it's casual-chic with shorts - like a sophisticated romper – or all dressed up.
The Blazer
It's not the typical suit jacket but the blazer thrown on over a dress, pant or even pair of shorts; not to create the look of a suit, but for a bit of casual ease, as if to replace the usual cardigan. Slightly oversized, and definitely not uptight, the idea of throwing a blazer over the bare shoulders come Spring and Summer '09 is something you might want to incorporate into your look.
Colour
Colour is a huge consideration for pieces this Spring. So much so that it should be listed as a trend in and of itself. Bright colours were seen at Fashion Week including lemon yellows, neon oranges, chartreuse, fuschia and bright blues. Black and white are a staple and were present as well as neutrals such as tans and greys. Muted brights such as mint-green and coral are also big.
Pretty Floral Prints:
The Spring is all about flowers! From the oversized flower worn by Carrie in Sex and the City: the Movie to an abundance of floral prints and patterns designers sent down the runways.
Details to Keep an Eye On:
Collarless jackets, trench and pea coat styling, bows and ruffles at the neck, defined waists, the belted shift dress or shirt dress, chunky necklaces and strapping.
